How to get started with Journalism as a profession

This is a new era of cultural and developmental changes in India, where there is a fresh event to be discovered, every hour. People want to be well informed about all of the political, educational, technological and sports related stories that take place around the country. Without Journalism it would have been impossible for these stories to reach the people and influence them in the process.

Journalism is considered to be a very dynamic and an extremely fast-paced career. Due to the recent advancement in technology and the change in media equipment, the communication channels for journalists have broadened from newspapers to radio, then to televisions and finally to social media platforms and news websites.

Journalism is the spread of relevant information to the general public, in order to keep them abreast with the recent vicissitudes in the world. This is a competitive profession that requires a huge amount of skill in writing, editing and researching. Due to the increase in audience, journalism has become a prestigious career choice for many students.

Even though journalism is a very competitive career path, it is considered to play an important role in the development of India. Even though journalists are usually glorified and respected, they can be made to suffer due to their attempts at unveiling the truth. Their job can sometimes be disparaged because they can go to extreme lengths in order to unmask the falsity of situations or events. An in-depth knowledge in current affairs is the most important factor that will help you make your career in journalism.

You should not have, even an ounce of lethargy, because this job entails enthusiasm, perseverance and lots of patience. You will be required to do a lot of hard work for years in order to become a successful and authentic journalist. You will be the part of a never-ending learning process which will teach you different prospects, every day. You should be comfortable in working for long hours and meeting sharp deadlines, and you should deliver original information in a presentable and understandable manner.

In short, you are required to have writing skills, technical skills, investigative skills along with ethical skills in order to become a good journalist. A 3-year bachelor’s degree program in journalism and mass communication or media studies will help you start your career.

There are many types of journalism from which you can choose from:
• A career in the print media where you can work as a feature writer, correspondent, illustrator, proof reader, copywriter or editor.
• A career in electronic media where you can work as a researcher, presenter or a broadcast reporter.
• A career in the newly formed web media where you can work as a web journalist. Your job will be to make the content for the news engaging in the most sharp, presentable and reader friendly way possible.

 

No matter which type of journalism you choose, you will be presented with numerous amounts of career options in order for you to excel. If you persist to work with passion and determination in this field of work, then a career as a journalist will be fulfilling and lucrative for you.

You can earn a minimum annual salary of about Rs. 2 Lakh to Rs. 5 Lakh with experience, and as a fresher or an intern you may get Rs.10,000 to Rs. 20,000 per month. Once you become and senior reporter with 10 to 12 years of experience, you might be getting a package of Rs. 1 Lakh to 2 Lakh, monthly.
